From Driech to "Amaze-balls": Finding the Winter Sweet Spot

Kris Murphy | FEB 24

I picked up a fantastic addition to my vocabulary while on a yoga retreat in Scotland: Driech. I use the word often, especially in Spring.

It’s a Doric word (Old Scots) used to describe that specific kind of dreary, bleak, soul-sapping weather. And let me tell you, yesterday was pure Driech. As someone who lives for the outdoors, being "squirreled away" inside while the wind howled was a genuine challenge. I was itching to put on my gear and get out there, but Mother Nature had other plans.

The Turnaround But today? Today was stellar. I headed out for a lunchtime walk and it was—for lack of a better phrase—amaze-balls. (Seriously, who coined that term? Weirdo.)

The sidewalks were surprisingly bare, and the air was that perfect kind of crisp that feels like you're drinking it rather than breathing it. There I was: stride-walking, arms swinging, smiling like a total fool.

Finding the "Sweet Spot" Don’t get me wrong, I’m no winter hater. In the last week alone, I’ve:

  • Braved a 40-second ice dip in Killearny Lake.

  • Roasted weenies and s'mores at a backyard campfire in the snow.

  • Finally located my lost snowshoes.

The real magic happens for me in that -3°C to -10°C window. No wind, bright sun—that’s the sweet spot. It’s the kind of weather that makes me dream of crocuses, robins, and running in shortie shorts (which, let’s be honest, should probably be illegal).

Yesterday’s Driech was just a battery recharge. Today? Let's go!!

In case you are wondering, I am teaching Yoga on Tap this Saturday. The class is filling up fast, so if you are planning to join, let me now. It's looking like we might sell out this week. Sign up!
